What's going on with the rising cost of COTTON?!
The cost of our favorite comfy fabric has sky rocketed to an all time high of $2.30 per pound! What does that mean to you and me? Well, I've been hearing alot of the buzz because so many of the products
we carry are made of this wonderfully soft, washable and breathable fabric. It's qualities make it the perfect fabric for our children... quality bedding and clothing has always been of 100% cotton. The price hike
seems to be mainly for these three reasons...
- the demand has grown as the middle class has grown around the world
- the global crops have been weak due to weather (flooding and freezing)
- some growers have abandoned cotton for more profitable crops
These reasons started the problem but to add to it now some are saying that price speculating is making it worse. The owner of one of our favorite companies, Kissy Kissy, was quoted saying, "What is frustrating
is that we consider this continuous rise to be purely speculative at this point". I believe that this "speculation" drives prices up because no one wants to lose money so they raise costs just in case. Many of our
brands, like Kissy Kissy, have been absorbing these elevated costs hoping the hike is temporary. Some manufacturers however are blending fabrics like polyester, rayon and nylon in with the cotton. It's one solution but do you
really want cotton blend crib sheets and baby apparel? It's just not the same on their sensitive skin. Others are thinning the fabric down until it's almost see through which doesn't wash well or last very long. There is
also bamboo, the cotton alternative which is gaining popularity. The bottom line in my opinion is, prices should get alittle better when crops are strong, but until then I believe manufactures and retailers are doing their
best to absorb these costs so retail prices are maintained.
